Preparing your print project the right way

A few simple rules for print-ready files, a glossary to understand printing jargon, and answers to the questions we hear most.

Files

8 rules for a print-ready file

A well-prepared file means your order starts sooner and the result matches your expectations.

  1. 1

    Send a high-resolution PDF

PDF (ideally PDF/X) keeps your fonts, images and colours. Illustrator, InDesign and CorelDRAW files are also accepted.

  2. 2

    Work in CMYK, not RGB

Screens display RGB, presses print CMYK. An RGB file can shift colour when printed, especially bright greens and blues.

  3. 3

    300 dpi images

At actual print size, your photos should be 300 dpi. An image taken from the internet is almost always too small.

  4. 4

    Add 3 mm bleed

If a background or photo runs to the edge, extend it 3 mm beyond the trim size. Otherwise a white line may appear after cutting.

  5. 5

    Keep a safety margin

Place important text and logos at least 3 to 5 mm from the trim and folds.

  6. 6

    Outline or embed fonts

Otherwise your text may be replaced by another font when the file is opened.

  7. 7

    Specify your Pantone colours

If your logo uses a Pantone colour, give us its reference: we can print it as a spot colour for perfect accuracy.

  8. 8

    Black text in pure black

Small black text should be black only (K 100%). For large black solids, ask us for our rich black.

Packaging and labels

  • Always start from our die-line, at the correct size
  • Put the cutting line on a separate layer, as a spot colour named "Die-cut"
  • Don't place text or logos on the glue flaps
  • Check the reading direction of each panel once the box is assembled
  • Leave a white area for the barcode and batch number if needed
  • Ask for a blank mock-up to validate assembly

Foil, spot varnish and embossing

  • Prepare each finish on a separate layer, as a 100% spot colour
  • Use vector elements, not images
  • Avoid very thin lines (under 0.3 mm) in foil and varnish
  • Embossing is prepared with the foil or on its own, in vector
  • On soft-touch lamination, foil and spot varnish stand out beautifully

Glossary

Printing vocabulary

CMYK
Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black: the four process inks that reproduce all colours.
Pantone (spot colour)
A pre-mixed ink that reproduces one precise colour exactly, such as a logo colour.
Bleed
A 3 mm area beyond the trim size that is cut off. It prevents white edges.
Paper weight (gsm)
Paper weight in grams per m². The higher it is, the thicker and stiffer the paper.
Coated paper
Paper with a fine coating that makes printing sharper and brighter. Available in matt and gloss.
Lamination
A very thin film applied to protect the print and give it a matt, gloss or soft-touch feel.
Spot UV varnish
A gloss varnish applied only to certain areas to make them stand out.
Hot foil
A metallic film (gold, silver, colour) applied with heat and pressure for a precious shine.
Embossing
A relief created in paper or board by pressing between two dies. You can see and feel it.
Creasing
A fold line pressed into board or heavy paper so it folds cleanly without cracking.
Die-cutting
Cutting along a precise outline with a custom die: boxes, labels, windows.
Imposition
Arranging pages or items on the press sheet to optimise paper and converting.
Perfect binding
Binding where pages are glued into a flat spine, like a paperback.
Pre-cut
A cut through the label but not its backing, so it peels off easily.
